Since 2009 the Alfred Wegener Museum in Zechlinerhütte belongs to our department. As a child Alfred Wegener (1880-1930) spent his vacations there. He was a "Viking of science" who wanted to discover the secrets of nature with his own observations. He founded the theory of plate tectonics and undertook four trips to the polar region. He died during his great Greenland expedition in 1930. The museum presents the life of the researcher and raises awareness of questions about climate change.
